Is That Rash Really Eczema or Contact Dermatitis?

Is That Rash Really Eczema?
Is that rash really eczema? Try this simple test to make sure it’s not just a case of contact dermatitis caused by irritants in skin care or laundry detergent or fabric softener.

Have you ever dealt with a stubborn patch of dry, rashy skin that you thought *HAD* to be eczema? We sure have, so we turned to an old friend for advice before going straight to the dermatologist.

Melinda Olson, nurse and founder of Earth Mama Organics, taught us that much of what we call eczema in children is really just a case of contact dermatitis. This means you might be dealing with a rash caused by something coming in contact with the skin, like toxic chemicals in mattresses, laundry detergent, dryer sheets, and even clothing.

An Easy Way to Test for Eczema vs Contact Dermatitis

While food allergies are also worth checking into, it's often as simple as removing the offending hidden irritants (pay close attention to those sneaky fragrance chemicals often found in natural skin care products!).

You can test the theory out by taking a break from all skin care products and washing with warm water only for several days. Then slowly add back in only clean, organic products made without questionable chemicals. Or if you're more of a DIY-er, try unrefined, organic coconut oil for soothing and moisturizing your baby’s tender skin. You'll find in most cases that rashes and dry patches will clear up within a few days!

So consider going back to the basics before you make a trip to the doctor and end up with a diagnosis of eczema along with a prescription for petroleum-based steroid cream. You just might find that less is more when it comes to treating eczema naturally!

If it turns out to be a legitimate case of eczema, try making your own natural eczema balm or try Earth Mama's new calendula-infused wonder called Baby Face Organic Nose & Cheek Balm. We love it and hear nothing but rave reviews from every eczema suffering friend we've shared it with!

P.S.  If you're worried about using coconut with a child who has tree nut allergies, click here to learn more about how it's not typically grouped in the same category as tree nuts.
